CHICAGO, Ill. (WREX) – The Illinois Department of Public Health today announced the first case of West Nile Virus (WNV) of 2024 in Illinois.
The Illinois Department of Health encourages people to practice the three R's to protect themselves from mosquitoes: Reduce, Repel and Report. Avoid puddles and wear long-sleeved, light-colored clothing to reduce your chances of being bitten. It's important to remember that mosquitoes do not breed in direct sunlight, so most mosquitoes emerge at dawn or dusk.
The mosquito-borne disease can be detected through commercial testing and clinical symptoms, but IDPH sent the initial positive case to the CDC for confirmation, pending confirmation.
The individual, who is in his 60s and lives in rural Cook County, contracted West Nile virus in mid-June.

“Summer is mosquito season in Illinois, and these mosquitoes increase the risk of contracting vector-borne diseases like West Nile Virus,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. “We encourage all Illinois residents to 'Fight Against Insect Bites' and protect themselves and their loved ones from insect bites that can cause serious illness.”
In 2023, the number of infected people was 119, up from 34 in 2022.
In 2023, there were six deaths, compared with seven in 2022.
The first case of 2023 occurred in late June.
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes that pick up the virus from infected birds.
Common symptoms of WNV include fever, nausea, headache and muscle pain.
Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks.
Four out of five people never develop symptoms.
In rare cases, serious illness can occur, including brain infections such as meningitis or encephalitis, paralysis, and death.
People over the age of 50 and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness from West Nile virus.
There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for WNV, so minimizing the risk of contracting WNV is extremely important.
IDPH encourages the public to “fight the bite” and take steps to prevent WNV by practicing the “three R's”: reduce, repel and report.
reduce – Make sure door and window screens close tightly. Repair or replace any screens that have tears or other gaps. Keep doors and windows closed. Remove or refresh weekly all sources of standing water where mosquitoes may breed, such as bird baths, ponds, flower pots, wading pools, old tires and other containers of water.
Repel – When you are outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants, and a light-colored, long-sleeved shirt, and apply an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, or IR 3535 according to label directions. CDC does not recommend using products containing lemon eucalyptus oil or paramenthanediol on children under 3. Ask a doctor before using insect repellents on children under 3.
report – Report roadside ditches, flooded yards, and other areas that have had standing water for more than a week, or similar areas where mosquitoes may breed. Your local health department or city hall may be able to add insecticide to the water to kill mosquito larvae.
