Real Earthquake Simulation Exercise in Marin County Puts Urban Search and Rescue Team to the Test

MARIN COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) – In the North Bay, first responders were put to the test in a major earthquake disaster drill like no other.

The capabilities and preparedness of Marin County rescue teams were tested through real-time simulation. As a reminder, this was just a training exercise.

“We are simulating an 8.2 magnitude earthquake,” said Marin County Fire Chief Graham Groneman. “The shaking could last anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute.”

The training was very realistic. Team members cut through concrete rubble and broken glass to reach wrecked cars. Some of the simulated victims were dragged to safety.

We had to lift one of the victims out of the building in a stretcher basket.

“The goal of this program is to get troops on the ground as efficiently as possible to save as many people as possible,” Groneman said.

The training skills used here could be the difference between life and death during a real disaster.

The Governor's Office of Emergency Services monitored the drill and evaluated how the team responded.

“Our motto is to be prepared,” said California Office of Emergency Services Deputy Chief Jack Frey. “We don’t know when disasters will strike, but we know we have to be prepared.”

These exercises were conducted one mile from the San Andreas Fault, which destroyed San Francisco and the city of Point Reyes in 1906.

Historic images show the force of the massive earthquake, which was enough to derail a train.

“I want to highlight that this is a seismic zone. It runs through Marin County,” Groneman said.

Performing these drills correctly meant that the team was prepared for the next major earthquake.

“This is real life. These are things we need to be prepared for year-round, 24/7,” Groneman said.
