JNU's funding hits highest level under Modi govt: RTI reveals University also faced more FIRs
A Freedom of Information (RTI) application filed by Pune activist Praful Sarda has revealed that Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) received the highest funding under the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This came to light after the activist sought all information related to grants given to JNU during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure and in the previous decade.
The move comes at a time when JNU is embroiled in several controversies, ranging from anti-national slogans to campus protests by scores of students, led by Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid. It is also accused of being lenient towards Left ideologies.
The RTI reply also showed that JNU received a total grant of Rs 2,055 crore from 2004-05 to 2014-15. However, from 2015-16 to 2022-23, this grant increased to Rs 3,030 crore. This indicates that JNU received 1.5 times more funding during the Modi government’s tenure than in the previous decade.
Looking at the number of complaints filed against JNU students, it was revealed that before 2016, no complaints were filed against the university. However, since then, the JNU administration has filed 35 complaints against its students.
Sarda had to face several hurdles in getting detailed information about these FIRs. He was not getting timely responses or complete information about the FIRs through the RTI route.
“In 2016, for the first time in the history of JNU, 35 FIRs were registered by the JNU administration. They did not disclose the names and number of people involved. Many more details are still awaited. I just hope that this time, without any further delay, the Central Public Information Officer of CPIO will respond promptly,” Sarda added.
Sarda suggested that the government invest in more national universities and support existing ones. He stressed that universities in Mumbai and Pune should be given priority as they cater to many students from rural areas.
“We need more national universities and the government should give priority to universities in Mumbai and Pune. Every year, lakhs of students from rural areas get admitted there and this will be very beneficial for them,” Sarda concluded.
