UPDATE: Kilauea alert level downgraded to advisory again as seismic activity declines: Big Island Now
Map from a 4:28 a.m. Facebook post by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
The volcanic alert level for Kilauea Volcano has been lowered to Advisory from Watch as local earthquakes and ground deformation rates on the Big Island volcano's upper east rift zone have decreased significantly after a burst of intense activity early this morning.
There are no indications of an imminent eruption at this time.
“The nature of this pulsating activity may represent phases of intrusive activity beneath the Upper East Rift Zone,” officials said. “Additional seismic pulses or swarms may occur with or without warning, leading to either continued magma intrusion or lava eruptions.”
According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, tremors have increased twice in the past 24 hours, prompting the issuance of a status report and a brief change in the alert level.
During that time period, about 50 earthquakes were recorded below the summit of Kilauea and about 357 earthquakes below the upper East Rift Zone, most at depths of up to 2.5 miles underground.

The largest increase in earthquakes was observed below the Upper East Fault Zone, where the number of 111 events observed in the same area in the previous 24 hours tripled.
Most of the earthquakes were less than 2 on the Richter scale, but there were 13 earthquakes of 3.0 or higher on the Upper East Fault Zone. The largest seismic event was 3.4 on the Richter scale.
A field crew from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory examined the Chain of Craters in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park this morning and found no large cracks associated with recent activity.
Earthquake and ground deformation rates under the Central and Lower East Fault Zone and Lower Southwest Fault Zone remain low.
In the event of a significant change in volcanic activity, another volcanic activity notice will be issued.

Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island has not erupted, but increased seismic activity and ground deformation centered near the Pauahi Crater on the Upper East Rift Zone, which began around 3:30 a.m. today, suggest that magma may be moving underground.
Accordingly, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory raised its ground hazard alert level from advisory to watch, and the aviation color code was raised from yellow to orange.
A volcanic eruption is possible in the upper eastern rift zone of Kilauea volcano within the Hawaiian Volcano Park, but the situation is evolving rapidly, and at this time it is not possible to be certain whether an eruption will occur.
The activity may remain underground.
If an eruption does occur, it is also not possible to determine where such an outbreak might occur, but the area between Hiiaka and Maunaolo craters in the national park is potentially at risk for a new eruption based on past patterns of eruptive activity in this area.

Previous eruptions have occurred in this area of Kilauea's upper East Rift Zone over the course of hours to months. The location of any future eruptions will determine which areas may be in the path of any new lava flows.
This reference map shows features found in the Upper East Rift Zone of Kilauea. The Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Crater Trail follows the Upper East Rift Zone. Volcanic craters, thermal areas, and lava flows are evidence of a long history of magma movement along this rift zone. Upper East Rift Zone eruptions typically occur near the southeastern margin of Kalaupale, or where the Upper East Rift Zone meets the Central East Rift Zone near Pauahi Crater.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to closely monitor Kilauea Volcano. Should there be a significant change in volcanic activity, a new advisory will be issued.
The observatory is also in close contact with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Temporary closures have been implemented due to increased activity.
Residents and visitors should stay informed and follow the guidance of the County of Hawaii and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
