Canadian faces Paul in third round at Flushing Meadows

Gabriel Diallo beat Arthur Fils on Thursday at the US Open to reach the third round of a major tournament for the first time. By Andrew Eichenholz

Gabriel Diallo's smile was revealing Thursday night in New York.

The 22-year-old Canadian qualifier showed his delight after beating 24th seed Arthur Fils 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round of the US Open. Diallo, who stands 2.03m, started the week without winning a major. He now has two.

“I’m obviously very happy, especially with the way I played throughout the summer,” Diallo said. “I was able to play good games and maintain a very good level by giving myself chances to win. Now it’s time to recover, try to analyze the game and prepare for Saturday.”

The former University of Kentucky player explained that a significant moment for him came in July at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Chicago, where he lifted the trophy. Diallo did not drop a single set all week en route to his third Challenger trophy.

“Especially the way I won it. I didn’t drop a point all week,” Diallo said. “I only had five break points the whole tournament and I didn’t hit 25 aces in a match. I was playing really well behind my serve, so I think that gave me the confidence to know that even if I don’t serve very well, I can still create good chances to win.”

After that, the Canadian reached another Challenger semi-final in Cary and progressed through qualifying at Flushing Meadows to earn a spot in his second major main draw.

“In the second round of qualifying, I was down 6-3, 5-3. I saved two match points, so I think everything is a bonus now, because just a week ago I was thinking about going home,” Diallo said. “Obviously, there are a lot of nerves, but you try to focus on tactics, what you can control, where you want to hit the ball, what you want to do to win the point.”

The Canadian is now one win away from reaching the second week of a Grand Slam tournament against No. 14 seed Tommy Paul.

A rising star whose father is Guinean and mother is Ukrainian is shining on the world stage.

“My father comes from a very small village, you don’t even see it on the map, actually,” Diallo said. “He and I tried to go to a map to see it, but it doesn’t appear on the map. I’m not even kidding.”

Diallo is 103rd in the PIF ATP Live rankings, so he is certainly on the map now.
