Southern California has experienced a series of earthquakes in recent weeks, raising concerns among residents that a major quake could be imminent.

“Small earthquakes certainly help us understand fault behavior, but they can’t tell us anything about prediction yet,” says geologist and civil engineer Ignacio Sepulveda.

Although the exact time, location and magnitude of an earthquake remain unpredictable, Sepulveda explains that science and historical data can help assess the likelihood of future seismic activity, which is crucial for improving infrastructure.

“Because we know how often earthquakes of a certain magnitude occur, we can use this information to design our cities, because this information about the frequency of earthquakes can be translated into the probability of an earthquake occurring. And these probabilities can be used to design buildings, to design ports…,” Sepulveda added.

By applying this knowledge to urban planning, we can better prepare for the realities of seismic risk, Sepulveda says.

“Here in San Diego, we need to understand that the last major earthquake on the southern San Andreas Fault was in 1680, and it was a magnitude 7.8 earthquake… This area typically experiences an earthquake every 140-150 years, so that means this place could have an earthquake at any time and we need to be prepared when that day comes,” Sepulveda explained.

In addition to the long-awaited earthquake on the southern San Andreas Fault, San Diego County also has parallel faults that may be less powerful but could be more destructive.

“These faults, although they can generate earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or 6.5, the problem is that they are very close to the city and therefore can still cause a lot of damage,” Sepulveda warned.

How to prepare for an earthquake

To prepare, Sepulveda advises, “Instead of worrying, act as you always do and try to be prepared for an earthquake that could happen at any time.”

You can prepare by making an emergency plan, stocking at least three days' worth of water and non-perishable foods, preparing an emergency kit, keeping cash on hand, setting up a family meeting point, and securing large furniture in your home.
