Earthquakes continue in Oklahoma, though less than in past years.

ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) – While it may seem like there has been a spike in earthquakes in Oklahoma this year, data shows that's more of a feeling than a reality.

Since 2016, statistics from the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) show a steady decline in the number of earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater, and this year is in line with the trend so far.

“Between 2014 and 2016, you could see there were a lot of them, I mean hundreds a month,” said Nick Hayman, director of OGS. “But here we are in 2024, and there really aren’t that many.”

Earthquakes occur when stress built up along a fault line overcomes friction and is released in the form of energy, causing the ground to shake and shift.

Humans can cause “induced earthquakes” through excessive or irresponsible drilling and other activities that disturb the Earth, Heyman said.

However, he says recent changes in legislation have led to less ground disturbance, which may contribute to fewer strong earthquakes.

However, earthquakes remain unpredictable.

“If you ask me whether the number of earthquake victims will continue to decline, I cannot answer that question. No one can,” Heymann said.

However, he said OGS scientists do not expect to see any major earthquakes in Oklahoma in the near future.

“Again, we don't really think there's going to be the kind of earthquake that would bring down an entire building,” Hyman said. “We can't guarantee that it won't happen, but we think it's a very unlikely scenario.”

But what most people would consider a strong earthquake may not be as strong as the numbers show.

The magnitude of the earthquake is exponential, so a 3.1 magnitude earthquake is much stronger than a 3.0 magnitude earthquake, Hyman said.

“By the time you get to number five, it's a lot bigger than number three,” he said.

OGS has about 80 devices spread throughout Oklahoma to monitor earthquakes, so anyone who thinks they felt an earthquake is encouraged to check their seismic map.

While an earthquake strong enough to cause injuries is unlikely to hit Oklahoma anytime soon, it's important to remember, if the ground starts shaking, to drop to the ground, hide under a table and hold on until the quake stops, Hyman said.
