TAIPEI – A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan's sparsely populated Hualien County on the island's east coast on Saturday, the country's weather bureau said, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The Meteorological Administration reported that the earthquake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. The depth of the earthquake was 17 kilometers.

Taiwan is located near the intersection of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.

In April, Hualien was struck by the strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in at least 25 years. The quake killed nine people and injured more than 900, and there have been thousands of aftershocks since.

More than 100 people were killed in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, while a 7.3-magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
