The Great Oregon ShakeOut is an opportunity to prepare for “the big event.”

The University of Oregon will participate in the annual Great Oregon ShakeOut on Thursday, October 17, and recommends that all employees and students participate in an earthquake safety drill at 2:17 p.m.

UO will send notification that training is about to start through the UO Alerts mass notification system.

The event is designed to enhance earthquake preparedness, an important issue in a region that faces the risk of a devastating earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone and a coastal tsunami, in addition to periodic, less severe events. Earthquakes can occur almost anytime and anywhere, and most injuries are caused by falling or flying objects.

Representatives from UO Safety and Risk Services, the Cascadia Earthquake Science Center and the Oregon Hazards Laboratory are hosting two more events during ShakeOut Week to raise earthquake science awareness and preparedness.

Staff and student training will be held in the Erb Memorial Union Miller Room from noon to 1 p.m. on October 16. Participants will learn about earthquakes and the Cascadia Subduction Zone and steps individuals can take to be more prepared on campus and at Pitt.

On October 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Museum of Natural and Cultural History, there will be a panel of local seismologists and emergency managers from the UO and local agencies.

Both events will begin with a preview of the new documentary Rumblings: Preparing for Cascadia, sponsored by the Oregon Department of Human Services and featuring UO employees.

ShakeOut is an opportunity to practice “drop, cover and hold” for 60 seconds:

Get down on the ground. Cover your head and neck with your arms and bend over to protect your vital organs. Seek additional shelter, if possible, by sitting under a nearby sturdy desk or table. If no shelter is available, crawl next to an interior wall. Hold on to your shelter and be prepared to move around until the shaking stops.

These are the recommended precautions to take during an earthquake. Don't try to move more than a few feet or run outside. The shaking can quickly become so violent that you may not be able to run or crawl.

Alert applications

In addition to subscribing to UO alerts, people can receive ShakeAlert on their mobile phones. The ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system can quickly detect large earthquakes so alerts can be sent to people before they feel the shaking, giving them enough time to duck, cover and hang on. It is operated by the USGS in partnership with the Oregon Hazards Laboratory.

All Oregonians can receive earthquake early warning alerts on their personal cell phones via three different methods: from the Wireless Emergency Alert System, the Android and Apple operating systems, and the MyShake app powered by ShakeAlert.
