Major Earthquake Drills – October 17, 2024
October 10, 2024
Southern California has witnessed several earthquakes over the past few months. This seismic activity is a reminder that we must all be prepared and know what to do. Seismologists warn us of the possibility of a large-scale earthquake. All employees are encouraged to participate in this year's Great ShakeOut, an international earthquake drill on Thursday, October 17 at 10:17 a.m.
During the exercise, USC will test an all-hazard emergency response operations plan that includes communications, damage assessment and other essential functions.
All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to “drop, cover and hold” at 10:17 a.m. as part of this year's drill. Detailed instructions and more information are included below. Information is also available on our ShakeOut website.
This will be the largest earthquake drill in history, with more than 15.2 million people around the world participating. This exercise and campaign is organized internationally by the Earthquake Country Coalition, which is led by the California Statewide Earthquake Center headquartered here at the University of Southern California.
Please also take this opportunity to ensure that you have taken steps to protect your home and family in the event of an earthquake, such as developing a family disaster plan, obtaining a home emergency kit, and mitigating risks in the home environment. Remember, if you haven't already signed up for direct deposit for payroll, doing so will help ensure you receive your paycheck in a timely manner after a disaster strikes.
Additional information about ShakeOut workouts is available at www.shakeout.org. For information about drills conducted at USC or for assistance with emergency planning, please contact Steve Goldfarb in the Office of Fire Safety and Emergency Planning at [email protected].

A major earthquake shakes Southern California
Each department is required to facilitate this training within their offices, laboratories and classrooms. Here's how:
At 10:17 a.m., the exact time the first tremor would occur, everyone would fall, hide, and hold on. In a large earthquake, falling objects such as bookcases, light fixtures and other heavy objects pose the greatest risk, so the safest thing to do is to sit under a desk or table and hold on until the shaking stops. In our earthquake today, the shaking lasts a full 30 seconds. Remember, do not panic, run or run into the doorway. If you're in a hallway, stay away from windows and get down near an interior wall, to protect the back of your head and neck. Make sure to get down and cover the moment you feel the initial jolt. If you wait until the earthquake becomes stronger, it may be too late. Earthquake procedures for mobility impairments are available here.

Here is some valuable information about what to do after an earthquake:
Check for infestations in your area. Do not attempt to transport seriously injured people unless they are in immediate danger. Call for medical assistance (213-740-4321 at UPC; 323-442-1000 at HSC) and administer first aid if necessary. Seek assistance from building emergency response teams if necessary. Check the area for safety hazards such as building damage, fires, or gas leaks. If an area or building appears unsafe, leave the building using stairs, not elevators. If there are no obvious safety risks, there is no need to evacuate. If evacuation is necessary, report to your building's designated emergency staging area. Specific construction information is available here. For emergency information, go to emergency.usc.edu or call 213-740-9233. After a major earthquake, the university will implement emergency services to ensure the well-being of staff, faculty, and students. University leadership will announce any necessary suspension of classes. Departments will implement their own emergency plans. All departments must have a plan that allows them to help care for the campus community and resume normal operations and academic instruction as quickly as possible.
Here's a helpful checklist for getting ready:
Know the emergency exits, emergency assembly area, and location of emergency supplies in your building. Keep a personal emergency kit in your office that contains a flashlight, batteries, AM/FM radio, food, water, a small first aid kit, and personal items. Secure tall bookcases and other heavy items in desks to the wall to prevent them from falling in an earthquake. Contact FPM for assistance. Know your department's emergency plan. Talk to your supervisor to learn about your group's role in the event of an emergency on campus. Ensure that all important data used in your workplace is electronically backed up, and that all vital paper records are protected. Make sure you enter your correct cell phone number in Workday to receive Trojan alerts. Sign up now for automatic payroll deposit to ensure proper payment after disaster strikes. Make sure you take steps to protect your home and family in the event of an earthquake, such as creating a family disaster plan, having a home emergency kit, and mitigating risks in the home environment. Information is available at www.ready.gov and www.shakeout.org. Download the MyShake app to receive earthquake early warning alerts.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
