California's water supply could be disrupted by a major earthquake

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — When you live in Southern California, you may often think: When will the next big earthquake hit?

“We're afraid of earthquakes because they happen suddenly, we can't predict them, we can't see them coming,” seismologist Lucy Jones told Eyewitness News.

Jones is the first to acknowledge common fears of earthquake-related injury or death, such as those seen in the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

But should this still be our top priority 30 years later? Maybe not, she said.

“An earthquake is inevitable,” she said. “But a disaster is not.”

However, she points to one specific hazard that she says could affect the entire Los Angeles metro area, which is a large earthquake along the San Andreas Fault.

“Water is probably our worst problem, and every one of the canals that bring water into Southern California through the San Andreas Fault will break when that quake happens,” John said.

Comprehensive solutions to fully strengthen the pipeline network that crosses San Andreas would help, but for now she warns that we are looking at a crippling repair timeline that will likely change the lives of millions of people.

“We won't have any outside water for at least six months,” Jones said.

Consider this impact: widespread fires after an earthquake with no water to fight them, and businesses unable to operate. Clean water for drinking and bathing will also be an issue.

If a major earthquake strikes tomorrow, FEMA has plans to mitigate its impact, she said. But to what extent? It may not be a question of survival, but of immense stress and depression.

“You don't have water on tap, and now you need to stand in line for hours every day to get the water your family needs,” Jones said.

“What's life like when you can't shower? We could do it, but we wouldn't want to.”

Why is all this worrying? Jones believes, based on scientific studies, that an earthquake is likely.

The last major earthquake to hit San Andreas was more than 165 years ago.

The questions are: When will he strike? Will we be ready?

Jones offers this advice:

“Drink water,” she said. “However, as much water as you store, store more.”
