Report: Avalanche scours trading market for future help
Just as the Avalanche were wrapping up a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on home ice, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman published his 32 Thoughts blog. In one of his points, he emphasized that the Avalanche are looking for a forward. The Avs played without six of their top ten forwards on Wednesday.
“Don't be surprised to hear that Colorado is looking for forwards. We have to go through a miserable stretch where five of their top nine drop out,” Friedman wrote.
Earlier in the day, head coach Jared Bednar confirmed that Ross Colton broke his foot on Monday and will be out six to eight weeks. Miles Wood, who suffered an upper-body injury in the same match, will be out for seven to 10 days. The duo joined an insanely long list of injuries (and a suspension) that led to Bednar dressing a third-line defenseman against the Bolts. Not ideal.
Gabriel Landesog remains absent without a timetable.
Valeri Nichushkin is still suspended and will not be eligible for reinstatement until November 13.
Jonathan Drouin struggles with an upper body injury on a daily basis, although it is still unclear when he will return. Drouin hasn't played since opening night.
Artturi Lehkonen, who has not yet played this season, is aiming for a return next Tuesday at home against the Seattle Kraken.
It's anyone's guess who the Avs could target. This is purely speculation, but one name that immediately came to mind was Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nicholas Robertson. The younger brother of Dallas center Jason Robertson appears unable to find a steady role under new Leafs coach Craig Berube. He scored one goal in nine games this season, but scored 14 goals and added 13 assists in 56 games in 2023-24.
If the Avs were to trade for Robertson, it would be with the idea in mind that they are strictly looking for offensive help. Robertson, a smaller forward, is not known for his strong two-way game. But given a chance with talented linemates, he can hit the ground running offensively.
Robertson, 23, is on a one-year contract paying him $875,000. After this season he will be a restricted free agent. Given the low-cap hit, he could be a worthy gamble for general manager Chris MacFarland.
