Concept of breathalyzer for early detection of lung cancer
Early detection is everything when it comes to lung cancer.
Emma Morris, a PhD candidate in Cancer Detection and Treatment at HMRI and Newcastle University, said many lung cancer patients are diagnosed when they are already at stage four.
“If we catch it while it's treatable, the success rate of treatment is about 70 percent,” she says.
Dr Lenny Goreham, who has been working on the project since teaching in Wellington, New Zealand, is collaborating with master's students Garima Dobhar, Dr Zarina Amin and now Emma to develop the lung cancer breathalyzer. I've been working on it.

Emma is currently working on studying breath samples from healthy patients to characterize EVs in healthy breath.
In the next step, the researchers will collaborate with the Hunter Cancer Biobank to create a library of breath samples from lung cancer patients that will allow them to isolate EV biomarkers specific to lung cancer.
The breathalyzer then tests for these biomarkers.
“We want it to be a device that people can breathe into and get a reading right away,” Dr. Gorham says.
“Lung cancer is typically diagnosed by imaging or bronchoscopy and confirmed by tissue biopsy. Doctors still want to visualize the cancer, but they prefer a breathalyzer to get the first reading. is a much less invasive screening method,” says Dr. Gorham.
