Washburn Football fires former head football coach

TOPEKA Washburn has announced that Craig Schurig will no longer be the head football coach, effective immediately. The university announced this in a statement on Monday.

Schurig was the head coach of the Ikabods of the past 22 seasons. He has the most wins in school history with a career record of 142-109.

“We are grateful to Coach Schurig and his family for their long-standing commitment to this university,” Washburns athletic director Loren Ferre said in a statement. “He has built a solid program at Washburn, recruiting talented players and coaches during his two decades here. His commitment to excellence has laid a foundation for the future, and we appreciate everything Craig has done to advance our program moving forward, both on and off the field.

This season, Washburn finished with a 3-8 record, culminating in a 35-28 road win against Northeastern State on Saturday. The Ichabods have lost five games by one possession this year. Two of their losses were by one point.

This season follows a 2-9 record in 2023. This marks the program's first consecutive losing season since 2014-15.
