A 6.0-magnitude earthquake shakes Taiwan – CNA

The Central Meteorological Administration in Taiwan said that it recorded more than 50 aftershocks, and said that the strength of the earthquake reached 6.4 degrees.

The National Fire Agency said the roofs of many homes collapsed, while roads were closed due to falling rocks and landslides.

But the agency reported “no serious damage” from the earthquake, which injured 27 people, according to the Ministry of Health.

The aftermath of the earthquake saw the cancellation of classes and office work in the Nanxi area as well as the town of Dabu in the mountainous province of Chiayi, north of the epicenter.

Weng Changliang, chief of Chiayi County, said some roads in Dabu were “damaged and impassable,” and water and electricity supplies were also affected.

Taiwanese chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) said on Tuesday that all of its sites were operational following an overnight earthquake.

The company, which dominates the advanced chip industry and is a major supplier to companies including Apple and Nvidia, said it evacuated workers at some sites in central and southern Taiwan as a precaution after the earthquake, which occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

“Post-earthquake structural inspections have been completed at all sites, confirming that the structures are safe and operations are gradually resuming,” she said in an emailed statement.

“At present, the water supply, power and workplace safety systems are operating normally and all TSMC sites are operational. Detailed inspections and impact assessments are underway.”

It added that TSMC's construction sites were not affected and continued regular operations after environmental safety checks.
