AG’s advice to pursue on Garda’s Covid-19 power
The Government is seeking the Attorney General’s advice on new legislation that would give Garda greater powers to enforce Covid-19-related restrictions on the assembly.
It follows yesterday’s Cabinet decision to introduce stronger enforcement, especially in connection with private home meetings.
In an advice to the government issued last night, the National Public Health Emergency Team said the majority, or 172 of the 290 outbreaks, were in private homes.
It said Gardai should be given all the power needed to interrupt and prevent house parties.
The Cabinet also agreed that Gardi should be given new authority so that pubs that explicitly ignore public health guidelines will be closed immediately.
NPHET has expressed concern that pubs claiming to operate as restaurants may not always do so..
