‘More Important than the World Cup’: Why Thorne wanted to win a Super Rugby title more than the Web Ellis Cup

Queensland Reds coach Brad Thorne says he sees winning the 2011 Super Rugby Championship as more important than winning the World Cup on New Zealand soil the same year.

As history shows, Thorn’s Crusaders lost 18-13 to the Reds who won their first title to a record home crowd of over 52,000 at Suncorp Stadium, before proceeding to lift the Webb Ellis Cup with New Zealand by sneaking home against France. 8-7 in October.

But the surprise acceptance came after the local press in Brisbane, who has coached the Reds since 2018 and put them on track to reach the finals for the first time since 2013, asked if he remembered Queensland hosting the final.

All Thorne could do is roll his eyes as his memory returns to the pain of the loss in 2011.

“It hurts. It hurts as much as it hurts any other game,” said Thorne, who plays for two international centers.

“At the time, to me, that was more important than the World Cup, as crazy as it sounds, that year because of what was happening in Christchurch.”

What was happening, of course, was that little by little, piece by piece, Christchurch had to start against it after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake left the city in ruins and devastated it on February 22, 2011.

The Crusaders will eventually have to play away from their traditional fortress at AMI Stadium.

“They talked about the two cities (Brisbane and Christchurch) and the floods,” Thorne said.

“I was here (in Brisbane), always been back for six weeks during the summer, and I was here for the floods and it was painful and I lost lives.

“Earthquakes, that was a different thing.

“Everyone saw in the news that there is an earthquake and then it continues in your life. 8,000 aftershocks, 5 (6.3) on the Richter scale.

“This was a tough time for Christchurch. We didn’t have games, we traveled across (the country).

“That meant a lot at the time.

“Then on the other hand, I watched the 52,000 fans at Suncorp, an exciting team playing good football and how good it was in rugby. It’s been tough times since the early 2000s.”

Thorne would have added that these have been tough times since the Reds’ triumph year in 2011 as well.

Since Ewen McKenzie designed the Reds revival, and eventually, split from the franchise’s ways after two years, the Reds have yet to campaign for a final.

This piece of unwanted date can be put to sleep within the next month as they look to take third place in Super Rugby AU.

Asked if there was some extra pressure on the Reds given their recent lean years, Thorne said that competitiveness throughout the tournament meant his team could not look beyond Friday night’s game against strength.

“I don’t think the pressure, just being able to do it is exciting,” said Thorne.

“Just go ahead with this next job before us which is strength, a very enthusiastic team, but if you get some results, how well some finals are done in Brisbane.

“It’s been a while, right?

“You watched the last two weeks, the Waratahs match, and saw the Brumbies … Then we had Rebels, so this team knew you had to make sure you play every week.

“The focus should be on the task at hand. If we accomplish this mission, we can get past it.”
