Coronavirus Pandemic Affects Alberta Music Classes This Fall-Edmonton
The school is taking steps to prevent potential spread Coronavirus, COVID-19 will have a significant impact on the coming grade for students of all ages in Alberta, including students with a passion for music.
Roman Dubrule is a jazz musician set up to earn a music degree at MacEwan University, but his end date is at issue.
“I’m pretty sure I’ll never be back this year,” Doubleall said.
Mr Doubler said most of his classes will be online. Recitals are done online, not before the live audience, but vocalists and horn sections cannot be played.
“It’s a huge difference and I think it’s one of the main reasons I don’t want to come back,” Doubleall said of the restrictions.

The University of Alberta vocal, woodwind and brass music programs are also online. Face-to-face instruction is only permitted without respiratory therapy.

Edmonton Public Schools and Edmonton Catholic Schools also coordinate music classes. Singing, cheering and screaming in face-to-face classes are prohibited.
“Their children need to sing,” said Laurier Fanyan, President of the University of Alberta Corral Saint Jean. “Singing is part of our spirit, it’s part of our culture, it’s part of who we are as humans.”
Fagnan is president of the Canadian Choir, in addition to directing UofA’s French Choir. He said COVID-19 has closed 28,000 choirs nationwide.
He argues that there are few scientific data showing that singing poses a significant risk to the spread of coronaviruses.
“What comes out when you sing? Is it more than speaking? Is it about the same as coughing or sneezing? Where are the aerosols and droplets heading?” Fanyan said.
Fanyan will conduct a three-month survey to answer these questions by testing 16 singers with and without masks.
However, Alberta Health Singing is listed as a risky activity. Singing in the congregation is not strongly recommended and singers are encouraged to stay away from the audience and each other.
“Singing is an activity that carries a higher risk of spreading the virus than just talking to someone,” Dr. Dina Hinshaw said in May.
The new Coronavirus swept the Washington State choir that gathered for rehearsals in early March, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The report found that two members of Skagit Valley Corral died at COVID-19, with 87% of choir members having confirmed or probable cases.
“The infection was probably facilitated by proximity during practice and augmented by singing,” the report said.
