The table tennis club where you can see a doctor
A community group that is a health centre, table tennis club and social group is to expand following additional funding from Sport England.
The Over 50s Black Men (O5BM) Forum was founded in 2018 to represent more than 300,000 black older men in Britain.
It currently has sessions in Luton, Stevenage, Chelmsford, Grays, Southend, across London and will soon be in Birmingham.
The organisation’s Chidi Umeano hopes that by ‘scaling up’ it will provide more support to help men so they can ‘speak out’ and save the NHS money.

Umeano said the aim of the group was to connect men with the community, reduce loneliness and make them more active.
He said it was known in Luton as the “Stress Buster Group”.
Doctors are present at the sessions, so anyone can approach them for advice.
“We bring doctors, black doctors, who look like us, and people can ask them any question,” Umeano said.
He said that in one session, three doctors were questioned by 60 men for more than three hours.
When it comes to table tennis, he said a man, who had suffered a stroke, first joined the group three years ago and could not hold a racket, but now plays “non-stop” for an hour.
“It’s about bringing men out of their shells and speaking out,” Umeano said.
“So our dream and plan is to scale this up across the country and be part of that process that reduces costs for the NHS.”

Glen Campbell played table tennis for England in the 1970s and first joined the group after his sister told him about it.
“It’s fantastic, it’s a great idea,” he said.
Dr. Luton group member Richard Babatunde Ajuwon said: “Every now and then people come to me with health questions and I actually have an informal chat with them.
“If there has been an accident or an emergency, I can intervene.
“Having a place like this where you play and train table tennis is absolutely essential, not only for our physical health, but also for mental health.”
Enitan Kane, chairman of O5BM, said table tennis was chosen for its hand-eye coordination skills and was played indoors.
“That’s number one, black people don’t like the cold, even when you’re done you can socialize,” he said.
“It’s hard on the knees, we can’t jog anymore at our age, and most importantly, it’s cardiovascular.
“So it keeps our heart pumping, it keeps the blood flowing, it’s just a fantastic exercise to do.”

Tony Egynjobi said when he first joined the group two and a half years ago he had blood pressure problems that have since “completely disappeared”.
“I will connect with my friends, we will laugh, we will talk about different things and then we will do some sporting activities,” he said.

Dr. Trevor Adams, a doctor from Luton, visits the group to keep fit.
“It’s more than physical health, it’s emotional and psychological,” he said.
‘It breaks the social isolation.
“Many men don’t talk often, but we talk, we have the space to talk, to share.”
