They rejected Rwanda’s demand for a £100 million payment from Britain.
CPA judges ruled that Britain was not responsible for costs claimed by Rwanda over the past two years in relation to the program which was canceled in 2024.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson struck a deal with Kigali in 2022 to send migrants arriving in the UK to Rwanda. “dangerous or illegal routes”for example in small boats or trucks. The current British government says that in the two years before the program was canceled, only four people reached Rwanda, and all of their own free will.
The UK government website says around £290 million has already been paid to Rwanda, but Kigali claimed in its preliminary submissions to the PCA that two annual payments of £50 million had still not been made.
The PCA, established in 1899 to resolve treaty disputes between states, unanimously rejected the request for payment of both payments.
Relations between the two countries deteriorated after Britain cut its aid to Rwanda, accusing it of supporting March 23 Movement (M23) rebels in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
