A 4.6 magnitude earthquake shakes the Big Island of Hawaii

While you may think of earthquakes as a western problem for the United States, some of the largest earthquakes in US history have occurred in the east.

KAHALUE-KEOHO, Hawaii – A 4.6 magnitude earthquake shook the Kona Coast on Hawaii’s Big Island at 5:58 p.m. local time Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter of the quake was just over 3.5 miles offshore of the Kahaluu-Keoho community and 21 miles below sea level.

No tsunami warning was issued.

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake shook the Kona Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island at 5:58 pm local time on Monday.

The shaking was felt throughout the Big Island and parts of Maui.

According to the USGS, the quake was not related to magma movement and had no impact on the island’s large volcanoes, including Kīlauea — one of the most active volcanoes in the world — as well as Mauna Loa and Hualālai, which are still active but currently dormant.

This comes after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Big Island on May 22.

“Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours or days,” the US Geological Survey said.

There was no news about the extent of the damage.
