Donald Trump calls Graham Platner a ‘thug’ one day after his Senate primary victory

President Donald Trump lashed out at Graham Platner on Wednesday, repeatedly calling him a “thug” and a loser, a day after the Democrat easily clinched the party’s Senate nomination.

Trump made the comments during an Oval Office ceremony to sign a $70 billion immigration enforcement bill. He did not mention Platner’s name. But it was clear who the president wanted to talk about as he spent more than three minutes disparaging Platner while repeatedly calling Democrats “idiots” as Republican lawmakers around him laughed.

“I’ve been watching this thug in Maine,” Trump said. “He’s a thug and they’re trying to make excuses for him. I mean, he’s probably worse than any human being who’s ever run for office.”

The Platner campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment. But throughout his campaign, the candidate portrayed Trump as deeply corrupt, immoral and a threat to American democracy. And he accused his opponent this fall, Republican Senator Susan Collins, of failing to stand up to the Trump administration.

Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and Hancock County oyster farmer, won more than 70 percent of the primary vote Tuesday, about 10 months after the political newcomer exploded onto the national scene with his populist, progressive campaign. This is despite a series of controversies surrounding his past personal life, including revelations that he sent sexually explicit text messages to several women early in his marriage and reports describing turbulent and “toxic” relationships with former romantic partners.

Platner has repeatedly said he wasn’t always the best boyfriend during the “dark” years when he struggled with PTSD stemming from four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. But he presented his campaign as proof of redemption and refuted any allegations that he engaged in threatening behavior towards women.

The Democrat also framed the attacks on his personal life as evidence that his candidacy threatens the Washington political establishment as it attempts to distract from the issues.

On Wednesday, Platner’s campaign released a new ad claiming that some of the country’s most powerful Democrats and Republicans visited the private island of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“It seems the only thing the party establishment can agree on is love of Jeffrey Epstein — and hate of me,” Platner says in the ad. “Together we will remove our government from the Epstein class.”
