Vermont is considering an influenza outbreak. Unemployment in Massachusetts :: WRAL.com
Montpellier, Vermont — Vermont Public Health officials said the state is considering becoming the second state to mandate influenza vaccination as a way to reduce the burden of the flu in a coronavirus pandemic.
Vermont Health Commissioner Mark Levine said Friday that he needed to keep the state’s flu incidence as low as possible to avoid what he called a “cold.” He said last year that less than 43% of children aged 5 to 12 received the flu vaccine.
“Our main focus is on increasing vaccination coverage, especially among children and teens,” Levine said. “We can and must do better.”
Levine said he has not reached a decision as to whether all students need a universal flu vaccine. Massachusetts authorities have recently moved to demand flu vaccination at school. State officials also pointed out the need to avoid overburdening the health care system with both diseases.
Levine said the decision whether to need influenza vaccination is “as always driven by data and science.”
