It has made many of us work or study from home due to the pandemic, so earthquake preparedness training may look very different this year.

Earthquake preparedness is important because in the event of a major earthquake, people are more vulnerable to injury from falling debris than from the vibration itself.

Prepare for where you are: If you are indoors, the safest thing is to fall to the ground in a safe area and seek protection under a sturdy table or desk, if one is available. Once under the table, place your legs across your chest. Cover your head with one arm, and use your other arm to grasp the leg of the furniture in case the vibration causes the furniture to move.

If you are in a room without a table or desk, look for an interior wall away from windows or mirrors and not under light fixtures or near heavy furniture that could collapse. Slide with your back to the wall, bend your legs at your chest and cover your head with both of your arms.

During intense shaking, stay in place. Moving can result in falls or injuries from falling debris. Large items can turn on you like tall bookcases or heavy items on shelves or glass. After strong earthquakes, anticipate aftershocks. You are safer if you stay in place for several minutes to make sure the strongest vibration has passed.

If you are outside, try moving to an open area where nothing can fall on you. Then sit down, pull your legs to your chest and protect your head with your hands. External hazards include tree branches and stone masonry on buildings and overhead electrical lines.
