London (AP) — The head of the World Health Organization warned against the idea that herd immunity might be a viable strategy to stop a pandemic and rejected proposals such as “simply unethical.” ..
At a media briefing on Monday, WHO Secretary-General Tedros Adhanomgebreyes said health authorities usually aim to achieve herd immunity through vaccination. Tedros said that about 95% of the population must be vaccinated to obtain herd immunity from highly infectious diseases such as measles.
“Herd immunity is achieved by protecting people from the virus, not by exposing them to the virus,” he said. Some researchers have found that allowing COVID-19 to spread to apparently non-vulnerable populations helps build herd immunity and has proven to be economically devastating. Instead of blocking, he argued that it was a more realistic way to stop the pandemic.
“In the history of public health, herd immunity has never been used as a strategy to respond to outbreaks,” Tedros said.
Tedros said little is known about immunity to COVID-19, so it is not even possible to know if herd immunity is achievable.
“There are some clues, but I don’t know the big picture,” he said, saying the WHO recorded cases of people re-infected with the coronavirus after recovering from the first attack of the coronavirus. Tedros said most people appear to have some sort of immune response, but it’s unclear how long it lasts or how strong its protection is, and that each person responds differently.
“It’s just unethical to allow a dangerous virus that we don’t fully understand to run for free,” he said.
WHO estimates that less than 10% of the population is immune to the coronavirus. This means that the majority of the world is still sensitive.
Tedros also said that in the last four days, countries have reported record COVID-19 figures to the United Nations health agency in the last four days, especially because of the surge in Europe and the Americas.
