‘The Midnight Sky’ Trailer: George Clooney’s Netflix Space Movie

After lending his talents to a space setting as an actor in such endeavors as Steven Soderbergh’s “Solaris” and Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar-winning “Gravity,” George Clooney is finally ready to tackle space from the director’s chair with his upcoming adventure “The Midnight Ciel.” The Netflix release is an adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s novel “Good Morning, Midnight” and features an ensemble cast that includes Clooney, Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler, David Oyelowo and Demián Bichir.
“The Midnight Sky” stars Clooney as a scientist with cancer who tries to stop a group of astronauts from returning to Earth after a global catastrophe destroys the planet. If the astronauts return to Earth, they will most likely die. To send a message to the spacecraft, the scientist must venture into the toxic environment to reach an observatory powerful enough to send communication through the atmosphere.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Clooney introduced “The Midnight Sky” as “Gravity” meets “The Revenant”. The comparison makes sense because not only does “Gravity” star Clooney direct and star in the film, “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith has adapted the novel for the screen. Netflix has already had success with a space project this year, Jason Katmis and Hillary Swank’s family space drama series “Away,” although it was canceled earlier this month. “The Midnight Sky” strong cast and holiday release should make it an easy win for the streamer.
“The Midnight Sky” is Clooney’s first directorial effort since “Suburbicon” crashed and burned down with critics and audiences in 2017 – after a similar dud with “The Monuments Men” in 2014.
