Adventures Afield: It’s always fun to think about where the first cast of Adventure in the Field was thrown
The race is ON! As the ice slowly disappears from our lakes and ponds, I will follow its geographical retreat with the delight of someone watching the main sporting event.
Disappearing, you see, is a two-man race and will determine where I cast my first cast into open water. There is always a good chance that the place will be Lake Winnipesaukee, which opened up salmon fisheries without land. These chances are a little better that the first open water will be closer to home in northern New Hampshire.
At these locations, I will chase large, hungry pike as they enter shallow water to spawn.
As an outdoor biologist and writer, I take great care not to describe human expression to fish and wildlife.
Northern pike is my favorite exception and I think the best word to describe them is “tricky”. Lonely and territorial, surely, these medium-sized fish are a chore when it comes to all parts of their life cycle.
Northern pike, I suppose, has no sense of humor.
Those ponds and hinterlands where I know I’m holding a pike are already opening around the edges and I anticipate fishing some of them in the next few days. The ice out there fits well with the biology and behavior of these predator fish. As the water temperature approaches 40, both males and females enter shallow water to begin courtship. Unlike other fish, pike will not stop feeding during the spawning period and I have some of my most successful days in the early spring.
The most efficient pike fishing boat in the early season is a kayak. Lightweight and agile, they made fishing much easier than canoeing my youth. I often find myself tucking all my gear into the belly of a hard plastic boat and pushing it with the embankment toward the water.
Fishing kayaks have been developed to hold and store fishing gear in a way that provides stability and easy access. Most of my gear is tethered to the bow and never interferes with the toss or landing of a fish.
The calm nature of the sailboat is perfect for enjoying these fish. They are launched with relative ease and a strong paddle followed by gentle gliding will bring me to the distance from the shore.
The light and unobtrusive nature of the kayak also makes them really fun once the big fish hooks up.
Unable to withstand, kneel, or even shift their weight, the fight between man and fish becomes much more intimate … not exactly Hemingway’s “Old Man and the Sea,” but pretty close. I was being dragged and turned by some very strong pike while I was sitting in the kayak. It’s hard to reconcile with that excitement.
Normally at this point I would be discussing picking baits and deciding on choices. Fortunately, these details can be minimized; pike is not very picky in this fishing scenario. If I place a swim bait, a bait over them, or pass the bait past them, an aggressive impact is likely.
Fishing for kayak pike could make landing the fish a little difficult. This is exactly why I bring a net and a few long-nose pliers. With very large teeth and alligator-like stinginess, when trapped, it is a great challenge to unplug and release the fish.
In about two weeks, these large fish will be in a predictable location and are similarly easy to find. This year will be my first high seas fish of the season … but far from my last.
