The site collects tweets after the Japan earthquake in March 2011

A website displaying Twitter posts written in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 as the country prepares to celebrate the decade of the disaster.

The site places on the world map about 4,200 Japanese-language tweets with geotags posted within 24 hours of the magnitude-9.0 earthquake, visually expressing the confusion felt by places like the Tohoku region and the Tokyo metropolitan area at the time.

“I hope people think about (earthquake) day by interacting with tweets that were made at that time,” said Hidenori Watanav, a professor of information design at the University of Tokyo Graduate School who created the website.

In Miyagi Prefecture, a part of Tohoku, which was badly affected by the earthquake and tsunami that followed, someone asked a tweet posted by someone in the town of Shichigahama, “Are everyone alive?” Another person from Ishinomaki asked, “Did my mom evacuate?”

In Tokyo, where many people have been unable to return home due to the disruption of public transportation, tweets like “I decided to go home from Yaesu” and “I will stay overnight in the company” near the East Japan Railway Tokyo Station appeared.

“I pray for everyone’s safety,” one tweet read from Los Angeles.

“The posts reflect the candid thoughts of people who have faced extraordinary circumstances,” Watanaf said. “By combining tweets with a map, we can clearly visualize the circumstances at the time.”
