The second stage of the earthquake removal process begins

Zagreb, January 30, 2021 – The chair of the task force dealing with the effects of the December 29 earthquake, Tomo Medved, said Saturday that the second phase of the cleansing process has begun – the removal of buildings that were severely damaged in the earthquake that posed a threat to human life and health as well as neighboring buildings. .

The first buildings to be condemned were the old army barracks and the old store in Petringa. Medved said such buildings should be removed to clear the ground of new buildings and because they pose a risk in the event of a new earthquake.

Task Force members also visited a site in Petringa where a container settlement is being built. About a hundred containers will be used for housing and many more containers for companies, while 5 containers will be used as sanitation.

Task Force spokesman Mladen Pavi said the first containers will arrive next week, and all containers will be ready by mid-February.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic also arrived in Petrinia to provide support to the task force and thanked everyone for their assistance in the relief efforts.

He said that starting to remove the damaged buildings would speed up the reconstruction process. He added that it is good that 1,025 caravans have been established in the area and that 1,061 housing facilities are connected to the power supply.

Blinkovic announced that Transport Minister Oleg Butkovic, Finance Minister Zdravko Maric, and Deputy Prime Ministers Tomo Medved and Boris Milosevic will meet representatives of the state-owned highway operator HAC on Monday to discuss completion of the highway between Lyknik and Sisak.

“We believe that this project should be given priority now because connecting a better road is crucial for the long-term revitalization and economy of Sisak Moslavina County,” the prime minister said.
