The World Health Organization currently recommends not using hydroxychloroquine to prevent COVID-19.
Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial drug that is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It first received attention in March 2020 when former President Donald Trump stated that he was using it to prevent COVID-19.

Three of the trials tested the drug in patients who were exposed to someone who was tested positive for the virus. Three other tested patients with no known exposure. WHO has found with high certainty that hydroxychloroquine has little or no effect on the prevention of death or hospitalization from COVID-19. With moderate certainty, the drug was found to have little or no effect on COVID-19 infection.
The review also discouraged 80 trials still planned to test hydroxychloroquine. “Evidence of high certainty revealed about the lack of efficacy of hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis suggests that funders and researchers need to reconsider the initiation or continuation of these trials,” the review said. WHO’s recommendations are the latest blow to proponents of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for coronavirus. The Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for the drug in March last year and revoked it in June when new evidence suggested that it was ineffective.
