Remember the Oklahoma City bombing on the 25th anniversary

On April 19, 1995, at 9:02 am, the Earth shook under my feet. The semester shook in high school chemistry and shuddered. I thought it was my first earthquake. Something much worse, in fact, a sinister event – an act of domestic terrorism 15 miles away in downtown Oklahoma City.

The scientist will learn that Timothy McVeigh detonated a bomb – two and a half tons of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil crammed into the back of a Ryder truck parked at the northern entrance to Alfred P. Building. Mora Federal.

In the days following the blast, internal communication with the high school was a major source of information as the names of survivors were announced or, tragically, the student called to the main office to receive painful information about the heart. Every time the intercom explodes, everyone knew that it would bring either enormous relief or painful pain. There was no between them.

The explosion killed half of the building within seconds, killing 168 people. As details of this terror appeared in the heart of the country, the death toll included 19 children, eight federal law enforcement officers, and six military personnel, as well as mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters.

However, in the wake of this indescribable evil, the best human spirit came out. I directly saw this great American tradition of flexibility in the face of adversity. While my friends and I were setting up water to save workers at the site of the blast, I watched a community and Oklahoma standard stand out: service, honor, and kindness.

I will not forget that day in April. It was the moment that started me on the public service road as a federal prosecutor. By working together, the Justice Department and local and state law enforcement authorities sought justice for hundreds of broken families and lost 168 souls that morning. Their massive efforts eventually resulted in the condemnations of McVeigh and his co-conspirator Terry Nichols.

Historians and investigators alike have traced the roots of McVeigh’s motives, in part, to his extremist and anti-government views rooted in the far-right militia movement. Enforcement actions by the federal government despised Robbie Ridge, a confrontation between the FBI and a family of white separatists in northern Idaho, and the takeover of the David branch complex in Waco, Texas.

McVeigh was also influenced by William Pearce’s explicit racist writings in The Turner Diaries, a novel describing the violent overthrow of the United States and an ethnic war that resulted in the extermination of non-white people.

Unfortunately, these opinions continue today as social opponents and violent extremists reach new online audiences. In 2015, a church fire in Charleston, South Carolina, killed nine African Americans while studying the Bible. In 2017, a fanatic entered his car in a crowd of protesters at a white supremacy march in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 2018, a man was alleged to have attacked a synagogue in Pittsburgh and killed 11 Jewish worshipers during their services on Saturday morning. In 2019, a gunman targeting Latin Americans killed 22 people in a racially motivated shooting of El Paso.

This dire list of abhorrent anti-government actions and racistly motivated acts may persist, with the exception of the transformative power of our millions of good nations. Individuals who share the failed ideologies of white nationalism and hate hate appear again in American history. Their right to speak and think is protected by the First Amendment. However, as one of my colleagues noted, extremists are not assured of a receptive audience.

Just as the Oklahoma City citizens did in 1995, Americans continue to reject ideologies of intolerance, hate, and racial superiority. Coward McVeigh did not inspire a revolution nor a war of race. Those who follow his misguided streak will meet a similar fate.

There is no doubt that extremist ideologies are serious and threatening and cannot be ignored by words. Moral clarity and a commitment to the rule of law are required to overcome them. But when a fanatical ideology appears in a plan or violent act, public officials of local, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies will be ready to respond.

We remain vigilant about the threat of local terrorism to places of worship, companies, and government buildings. We use all available tools to stop violent extremists – to disrupt and engage them before they act, and to hold them accountable when they do.

Those who commit evil against America intend to create fear and confusion. But their cowardly actions only reinforce our resolve. Extremist ideologies contradict the pillar of our democracy, and they do not match our innate appreciation for justice, equality and the love of freedom.

Day after day, week after week, law enforcement authorities across America fulfill the first message that was surrounded by a member of “Team 5” – a group of first responders who dug under the rubble on April 19, 1995 – on the side of a newspaper registry building in downtown Oklahoma City, 25 years ago today. “We are looking for the truth. We seek justice. Courts require this. Victims weep over it. God asks for it!”
