Studies show that the COVID-19 vaccine can protect people for at least a year
Vaccines are still relatively new, and scientists are still studying how long the immunity from them will last.
Boise, Idaho — While Idaho continues to deploy the vaccine, doctors across the country are studying how long the immunity from COVID-19 can last after being fully vaccinated.
The main concern is how the vaccine will continue to withstand variants of the disease. Remember that all vaccines are still relatively new. Although approved by the FDA, scientists are still studying its effectiveness.
Scientists are looking at participants in vaccine trials conducted throughout the year. Fortunately, the people participating in the study have been in the study for about a year, and so far the immunity seems to be quite strong.
All these big variables, like the UK variant, are the variants of concern.
“Whatever you can do now to slow the spread, it won’t be a big deal,” said Dr. Patrice Burgess, Executive Medical Director of St. Alphonsus.
According to the CDC, British variants are currently the predominant strain in the country.
On Thursday, the Idaho Ministry of Health reported cases of 81 UK stocks, an increase of 31 from last week.
Booster shots can become a reality if the vaccine becomes ineffective against the UK and other variants. It could be similar to Influenza vaccination that can be given once a year.
“Some people think that might happen, but we don’t really know yet,” Burgess said.
But there is good news about the three A vaccine available to people in the United States.
“They all seem to be holding up pretty well, and fortunately they seem to be doing well against the current varieties or current strains out there,” Burgess said.
The situation may change as COVID-19 continues to spread. Burgess recommends that everyone take the same precautions recommended by health professionals throughout the pandemic. People must wear masks in public places, physically separate and avoid large numbers of people.
If people continue to be vaccinated, they can prevent mutations.
“If it’s mutated enough, the antibodies we have against the protein may not be effective,” Burgess said.
At that point, if that happens, another booster shot could be the answer. Moderna announced last month that it is working on a booster for variants.
“They need to consider whether we need to create another type of vaccine or booster that provides protection against that variant,” Burgess said.
According to Burgess, the best way is to vaccinate now.
“If we can control this now, we can prevent future variants,” she said.
