The Kashmir region of the Himalayas has been a flashpoint between India and Pakistan for six decades.
Since the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan, armed nuclear neighbors have waged two wars in Muslim-majority territory, and either or both have claimed some of it, but have complete control over it.
Today it remains one of the most militarized areas in the world. China administers parts of the territory.
