The factors that cause depression and burnout are similar
Recent studies have found that the personal and workplace factors that predict burnout overlap largely with those responsible for depressive symptoms.
New research displayed in General Internal Medicine JournalIt was led by Dr. Constance Gill, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina, and Lisa Rotenstein, MD, an MD at Harvard Medical School / Brigham and Women’s Hospital. .
“There is a long-standing belief that burnout is related to workplace factors and depressive symptoms are related to workplace factors, but is also heavily influenced by personal factors,” explains Rotenstein.
“We have found that the factors that cause burnout are more closely associated with the factors that cause depressive symptoms than previously recognized.”
The study examined 1,552 medical interns who participated in a training program at 68 institutions for depressive symptoms, mental fatigue, alienation, and potential factors.
Depressive symptoms were measured on a standard 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire, and emotional fatigue and detachment were measured on a 9-item Simplified Maslach Burnout Inventory.
Workload and learning environment satisfaction were assessed by standardized means. Personal factors assessed included age, gender, ethnicity, relationship status, sexual orientation, Parenting Status, specialty, self-reported history depression, Early life stress and neurosis score.
In this study, there was a significant overlap between factors that contribute to depressive symptoms and those that contribute to burnout, with about two-thirds of the differences due to individual factors in both depressive symptoms and burnout, and at work. A factor was found that caused a third of the difference between these measurements.
The term “burnout” is a relatively new term, first coined in his book by Herbert Freudenberger in 1974. Burnout: High cost with high performance. The definition of burnout was historically unknown, as there are more than 142 definitions in circulation in the literature. In contrast, depressive symptoms are clear and clinically validated.
The results of this study suggest that assessing depressive symptoms may be a validated, standardized alternative for assessing burnout among healthcare professionals.
They also emphasize that interventions that help address burnout are effective in addressing depressive symptoms and vice versa. Examples of such interventions include the use of resources such as writers to address the burden of writing, time banking for doctor services, and parenting to relieve stress from doctors with family obligations. .
“Before this study, depression and burnout were conceptualized as separate entities with different factors contributing to these results,” Guyu explained.
“This study suggests that there is a substantial overlap in both workplace and personal factors that contribute to an increase in both depressive symptoms and burnout.”
