Dancing is not just entertainment

Dedicated to inspiring acrobatic and contemporary dance styles, the two-day dance campaign, “Becoming I”, concluded on June 13 at Dhaka Gymnastic School, Panthapath. The event was organized by Taspia Karim, better known as Tia, an artist from the independent movement who studies architecture at Louisiana State University in New York.

“The event is about becoming more in tune with yourself and your art form,” smiles Taspia.

Taspia has lived in New York since 2008. Although her passion for dancing began in her late teens, the dancer began her artistic journey with western dance styles such as hip-hop, house and afro. .

“For me, dance is not just a form of entertainment, it’s a form of sport like any other, and it’s also a diverse educational subject,” shares Taspia.

“I could have organized my campaign in the United States or anywhere else in the world, but I wanted to start from my roots, which are in Bangladesh,” says Tia, adding that “dancing is a study where each movement becomes an expression. I wanted to reconnect with my culture and my roots through dance.”

“I’ve been a dancer for over two decades already, attending this event and learning how to be more in tune with my body has been really inspiring,” said Tazri Ahmed, a dancer attending the event, adding, “There’s a certain sense of freedom beyond the rules and gestures of the dance forms. Every part of my body feels naturally in tune with the rhythm, the piece and the lyrics of the music.

“Dance is not just about moving your body. Every movement and every gesture has a source, for me dance is the science of artistic movements,” shares Taspia. “Each dance variation has its own unique expression filled with our emotions, culture and stories.”

“The ‘Becoming I’ event is about being intuitive, it’s about interacting with yourself, your body and your passion,” says the dancer. “When your dancing becomes intuitive, your body will naturally move to the music and its narrative on its own,” Taspia mentions.

“Dancing is an educational journey for me, a journey that eases my mind and awakens my passion. I want to share my experience with everyone,” concludes Taspia.

Taspia Karim will be back in New York this week on June 16. However, “Becoming I”‘s journey has only just begun as she leaves with a promise to return.
