A-list commission launched to combat rising hate in Los Angeles County – Daily News
Public figures from entertainment to sports figures are joining Los Angeles County's efforts to combat the rise in hate crimes.
The “Unity Coalition,” launched Thursday under the umbrella of LA vs. Hate, is a new collaborative effort comprised of people from the arts, sports and entertainment industries dedicated to combating hate and promoting unity, officials said in a statement. Press release.
Coalition members include actress Alyssa Milano, NBA player Paul George, comedian Tig Notaro, actress Chelsea Rendon, actor Nathan Davis Jr. and singer-producer KC Porter, with “many more to come,” officials said.
Led by the county’s Human Relations Commission, LA vs. Hate is a community-focused campaign that aims to stop hate crimes and attacks, report when they occur and provide effective anti-hate resources, officials said. Recent campaign efforts include murals honoring LA’s diversity and public service announcements featuring victims.
“I look forward to working with this coalition to support communities that have been targeted by hate and to spread positive messages of solidarity and unity,” George said in the statement. “No matter who you are or where you come from, you should feel safe and welcome in Los Angeles.”
“I want to fight against the discrimination, bigotry and hate that is on the rise in Los Angeles,” Davis Jr. said. “I love my hometown for its incredible diversity that is reflected in my artistic expressions and those of so many other artists – and I will do my part to defend and protect it. Hate has no place in Los Angeles.”
According to California Department of Justice's Latest Hate Crimes ReportLos Angeles County reported the highest number of hate crimes in the state, a record 664 in 2023. Nearly 60% (397) of them occurred in the city of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reported 44 hate crimes, and Long Beach reported 31 incidents.
Additionally, attacks against LGBTQ+, Jewish and Muslim communities have increased significantly across the state over the past year, the department said. report said.
Officials said LA vs. Hate's toll-free hotline — 211 — has received 2,300 reports of hate since it launched in 2019. Yet research shows that hate crimes are still largely underreported due to stigma, cultural barriers and general distrust of law enforcement.
Robin Toma, executive director of the Los Angeles Human Relations Commission, said the coalition “provides a space for individuals from diverse backgrounds to share their unique lived experiences, as well as their power and privilege, in order to support the unity of all our communities against hate, hostility and systemic discrimination.”
“Together, we can make a meaningful difference in challenging prejudice, bigotry and inequality, and realizing our vision of a shared sense of belonging,” Toma said.
In the fall, the coalition will support a statewide Unite Against Hate Week from September 21-27, calling on local agencies to work with the community to end discrimination in all its forms.
