Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones Wins Head in Where the Crawdads Sing
Daisy Edgar-Jones, star of the phenomenally popular BBC drama Three Normal People, has been cast for the lead role of Kya in the big-screen adaptation of the hit novel Where the Crawdads Sing.
The story is set in North Carolina, so the 22-year-old actress will need to master the Southern accent associated with the region.
Where the Crawdads Sing will be directed by Olivia Newman, possibly best known for the Netflix counterculture film First Match (2018) with a screenplay by Beasts of the Southern Wild writer Lucy Alibar.
The 2018 book, Where the Crawdads Sing, was a huge hit for first-time novelist Delia Owens, topping the New York Times bestseller list for 32 weeks in 2019 and 2020 and selling for between 8 and 9 million copies worldwide.
The novel features twin storylines: the first concerns a young woman, Kya, abandoned by her mother and siblings and left alone with an abusive father in a swamp near a North Carolina town.
The second, a few years later, follows the investigation into the murder of her former boyfriend, Chase Andrews, a football star from the town of Barkley Cove, who at one point attempted to rape her. Kya, now a respected book author. about the area, is soon charged with his murder.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter are producing Where the Crawdads Sing for Sony Pictures through their company Hello Sunshine.
Edgar-Jones played Marianne opposite Paul Mescal as Connell in the BBC production of Sally Rooneys’ novel Normal People, a performance full of depth and the emotional pendulum of first love. It’s not hard to see why she won such a big role as Where the Crawdads Sing.
She will then be seen in a social thriller, Fresh, whose screenplay has remained strictly confidential.
It is not yet known when Where the Crawdads Sing will go into production or when its release is planned.
