Chadwick Boseman chooses lead actor for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
As Oscar season continues to unfold, a new question has been resolved for the next awards circuit. Netflix has confirmed to Variety that he will campaign against the late Chadwick Boseman in the lead actor category for his role in the upcoming “Ma Rainey Dark Background”.
Based on the play by Pulitzer Prize-winning August Wilson, the film is set in 1927 in Chicago, where tensions mount between Ma Rainey, his ambitious trumpeter Levee, and the white management determined to control his music.
Oscar winner Viola Davis (“Fences”) plays the “Mother of the Blues” and will also campaign for Best Actress. The rest of the cast, including Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts and Taylour Paige, will all be campaigning in the support categories. There has been only one movie in Oscar history to handle more than two black actor nominations from one movie: “The Color Purple” from 1985.
The original 1984 Broadway production, which starred Theresa Merritt and Charles S. Dutton as Ma Rainey and Levee, respectively, was oddly nominated in the Actors and Actresses categories at the Tony Awards. Many admirers of Wilson’s play have long held the role of Levee to be a co-conductor, just as important and narrative as the title of Ma Rainey. Others felt it crossed the line between a lead role and a supporting role, but sources shared that early views of the film adaptation make it a stronger and definitive lead portrayal.
Boseman, who died in August of colon cancer, will also see his work in Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” be considered best supporting actor. If nominated for Best Actor, Boseman would be the first posthumous nominee in the category since Massimo Troisi for “Il Postino” in 1995. If nominated for Support, he would only be the third person in history. Oscar after Ralph Richardson (“Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes” in 1984) and Oscar winner Heath Ledger (“The Dark Knight” in 2008).
During a presentation to entertainment reporters on Monday, Netflix featured scenes from the film, giving deeper context to the story, as well as a lively question-and-answer session with Davis and director George C. Wolfe. Excitement for the film continues to build.
