Ann Reinking dies at 71; Dancer, actor, choreographer and Fosse Muse
Mrs. Reinking played the role of Joan of Arc, alongside Joel Gray, in the short-lived 1975 musical Goodtime Charley. The following year, she joined the cast of the hit A Chorus Line, then appeared in Dancin, a musical review directed and choreographed by Fosse, from 1978.
When Dancin first opened, dance critic The Timess Jennifer Dunning wrote that Ms. Reinking had made the jump from cue to lead roles.
There was no doubt Miss Reinking had joined the ranks of Broadways’ brightest stars, Ms Dunning wrote. With her long legs, silky, ruffled hair mane and feline intensity, Ms. Reinking stands out in very fast-paced company.
(Fosse said he choreographed part of that show, Trumpet Solo, just so he could feature Ms. Reinkings’ leggy extensions.)
In 1986, Ms. Reinking starred in a revival of Sweet Charity, a production that also starred Bebe Neuwirth, who then starred alongside Ms. Reinking as Velma Kelly in the Chicago Revival.
Prior to the Chicago revival, Ms Reinking, then in her 40s, never expected to dance on stage again, she said. Indeed, at first, she refused the offer to play Roxie again. But the director, Walter Bobbie, persisted and she gave in.
She just doesn’t dance like the rest, Ms. Neuwirth told The Times in 1996.
Ms Reinking has also found on-screen roles, most notably as secretary to billionaire Oliver Warbucks, Grace Farrell, in the 1982 film version of the hit musical Annie. In the issue We Got Annie, the character of Mrs. Reinkings who had encouraged her boss to adopt the orphan title character plays a victory dance in which she jumps and twirls, celebrating with other Daddy Warbucks staff.
