In 1924, Ireland made its Olympic debut. One hundred years later, the country made another grand entrance at the 2024 Paris Olympics: that of Laura Weber, the New York-based Irish designer who created the looks for her native country's opening and closing ceremonies.
Although this is her first assignment, Weber actually has some experience in the Olympic realm. She embroidered three-time Irish Olympian Natalya Coyle’s wedding dress in 2021 and helped embroider Ralph Lauren’s Team USA uniforms when she worked for the brand when it first arrived in America a decade ago. Now, she’s taking on the task herself, creating two jackets that the athletes will wear at the two respective ceremonies, as well as a cotton jersey T-shirt, pants, and sneakers. The Opening Ceremony jackets are white, double-breasted, a departure from the country’s usual green. I felt like the white really represents what the Opening Ceremony is all about: athletes walking into the games with a blank canvas, feeling like anything can happen, she told the Ireland team. The design features each athlete's emblem as well as four shamrocks, representing the four provinces of Ireland. Of course, Weber had to include his signature embroidered throughout the design, and each jacket will feature the athlete's name, further personalizing the piece.
For the Closing Ceremony, Weber decided to return to the tried-and-true Irish hue, creating a dark green jacket with a more retro cut, inspired by a piece worn by Irish track star and former Olympian Sonia O'Sullivan. Gold webbing detailing on the bodice forms a five-pointed star, but should the athlete be lucky enough to win a medal during the Games, her ribbon will be the sixth point when worn with the jacket.
