Power struggle in region threatens Syria push
The decades-old Saudi-Iranian rivalry may dominate the headlines, but a Turkish-Emirati battle for the region’s future is spilling over from North Africa to the Middle East.
The rivalry between Turkey and the United Arab Emirates is rooted in a battle for the domination of global Muslim religious soft power.
The two states are fundamentally opposed to attitudes towards political Islam, with Ankara supporting Islamist actors and the Emirati crown prince Mohammed bin Zayed seeking to quell these trends.
Turkey and the United Arab Emirates are engaged in a regional power struggle. They see it as a zero-sum game, in which there is no way for both parties to win. If one wins, the other loses, said Sinan Ulgen, a former Turkish diplomat and president of the Istanbul Center for Economic Studies and Foreign Policy.
The impasse has intensified military clashes and complicated, if not interrupted, efforts to resolve the conflicts in Libya and Syria. It does not bode well for those who are reluctantly drawn to it.

In recent days, forces from the Turkish-backed Libyan government have made gains against rebels led by Libyan renegade Marshall Marshall Khalifa Haftar, who is backed by the United Arab Emirates.
From its base in Tripoli, the internationally recognized national agreement government (GNA) forced Haftar to abandon its ambitions to take the capital Tripoli and seized the air base at Watiya.
Turkish drones, probably operated by Turkish personnel, also destroyed a Russian-made Pantsir air defense system operated by Haftars forces.
Turkish support for the GNA in Libya amounts to an effort to determine who controls the country as well as the energy-rich waters of the eastern Mediterranean.
In Syria, Ankara is determined to prevent Syrian Kurdish nationalist forces from establishing a permanent and meaningful presence at its borders and to dominate the jihadist forces.
