PPP, PML-N demand accountability from Imran Khan over GHQ protest ‘confession’

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have slammed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan over his alleged confession that he had asked his supporters to protest outside the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi if he was arrested in May last year.

Addressing the media during a hearing in a case inside Adiala Jail a day ago, the former prime minister admitted that he had given a call for a peaceful protest outside the army headquarters in Rawalpindi in response to the “attack” on his Zaman Park residence by security forces before his arrest.

Responding to media reports about the party founders' statement, PTI leaders said the remarks had been wrongly attributed to Khan as he had not said any such thing.

PML-N leader and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said in a statement today that the “mastermind” of the May 9 incidents had finally confessed the sin of orchestrating and facilitating them.

Maryam called the PTI an anarchist group, saying its sole aim was to harm the state through mischief. She also alleged that Khan's residence in Zaman Park was used as a hub for terrorists.

Zaman Park remained the terrorists' training headquarters, where they practiced making firebombs and attacking the state, she said.

Referring to the PTI founder's injury following which his leg was put in a plaster cast, she said the May 9 tragedy was planned during the drama of tying the leg in a plaster cast for four months.

Regarding the PTI's claim that it had called for a peaceful protest, she asked what kind of peaceful protest it was, during which more than 200 military installations were vandalized.

Pakistan Air Force planes were set on fire, the house of the corps commander was set on fire and martyrs' memorials were desecrated.

Maryam said the same party had attacked the Parliament, PTV and the Prime Minister's House in 2014 and had also pushed the Chinese president to postpone his visit.

Meanwhile, PPP leader Senator Sherry Rehman termed Khan's confession of committing the May 9 crime as a confessional statement.

Finally, Imran Khan admitted to giving a call for protest outside the GHQ, she said, asking the former prime minister to seek an apology from the nation.

She said the confession about calling for attacks on the institutes was not enough and Khan should demand an apology for his crime.

The PPP leader said she held the government and state institutions responsible for the violent protests. She even targeted sensitive institutions in an attempt to escape arrest.

Furthermore, the politician lambasted the incarcerated PTI founder for restricting facilities of others in prison during his tenure and benefiting from every facility himself.

Rehman said he was giving interviews to foreign newspapers while meeting party leaders, while claiming they were being held in a “terrorist cell”.

It is pertinent to mention here that the former prime minister was embroiled in a series of cases for his alleged involvement in the May 9 riots, triggered after his arrest in a corruption case, which saw several military and state installations, including the residence of the Lahore Corps Commander, vandalised.

The then government as well as the ruling party have repeatedly accused the PTI founder and senior party leaders of plotting “organised” attacks on military installations.

Although he has won some cases, the former prime minister still faces no fewer than 12 cases related to the May 9 incidents, which are currently being heard by an anti-terrorism court.

Of the 12 cases, five cases were registered at Sarwar Road police station, three cases lodged at Gulberg police station and one case each at Race Course, Shadman, Mughalpura and Model Town police stations.
