Conservatives presented fictitious timetable for new hospital programme, new government says | News
The new hospital programme will not be feasible within the original 2030 deadline, the new health secretary has revealed.
Speaking in the House of Commons earlier this week, Wes Streeting accused the previous Conservative government of presenting an entirely fictitious timetable and unfunded programme for the project.
First announced by Boris Johnson in 2020, the $20bn programme was originally set to see 40 new hospitals built by the end of the decade, but has been hit by successive delays.
Last summer, the Court of Auditors found that the initiative was behind schedule and that only 32 projects could be completed within this deadline.
NHS trust leaders joined the growing number of critics earlier this year, denouncing delays, indecision and soaring costs, citing cost increases of up to 25%.
In his report to Parliament, Streeting said: “It is painfully clear that the previous government's new hospitals programme, which announced the construction of 40 new hospitals by 2030, is not achievable in this timeframe.”
I hope that the new hospital programme will be completed, but I am not prepared to give people false hope as to how soon they will get the facilities they deserve.
This is why I have asked officials to report to me urgently on the level of funding for the programme and to provide me with a realistic timetable for its implementation.
An update in February revealed that the standardised design of the NHP was largely complete, with modern construction methods set to feature prominently in a bid to speed up delivery and reduce costs.

“We will not gamble with the public purse, or with the people's trust, as the previous government did,” Streeting said.
The Member for Ilford North said that hospitals with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete were at the top of my list of priorities and added that, even beyond the new hospitals programme, the state of the NHS estate was poor.
It revealed that backlog of maintenance work and the direct cost of bringing the estate into compliance with mandatory fire safety requirements and statutory security legislation currently stands at $11.6 billion.
