Russian envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev said Turkey's launch of a new military operation in Syria was unacceptable.
Lavrentiev's remarks came during a press conference following the conclusion of theAstana 22» talks on Syria today, Tuesday November 12.
He added that Russia has repeatedly stated its disapproval of new Turkish operations in Syria, and “we still hope that the Turkish side will refrain from these measures, as they could have negative consequences for Syria itself.” .
He indicated that Turkish military operations will not solve the problem; on the contrary, they will only exacerbate it and have a destabilizing effect in the context of the unresolved crisis on the Lebanese-Israeli border and in the Gaza Strip.
Turkey is intermittently threatening to launch a new military operation in Syria against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which controls large areas of northeastern Syria and is classified by Ankara as a “terrorist group.”
Turkey has carried out airstrikes on Syrian territory targeting SDF elements and leaders, and it has carried out two ground military operations against them: “Olive Branch” in March 2018, during which it captured the city of Afrin in the Aleppo countryside, and “Spring of Peace” east of the Euphrates in October 2019, where it captured the towns of Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan recently concentrate on the establishment of a “security belt” with Syria on two occasions.
Erdoan said Turkey would complete the security belt along its southern border, referring to the Syrian-Turkish border part of which is controlled by the SDF.
He added that Turkey thwarted encirclement attempts thanks to operations carried out by the Turkish army and the “safe zones” it established.
Erdoan had already made statements on November 8, reaffirming his country's demands for the establishment of a 30-40 km long “security belt” along its southern border.
This happened during a meeting he had with Turkish journalists while returning from the Hungarian capital Budapest.
He added: “We will continue the fight to pursue terrorists in Syria and Iraq and eliminate terrorism at its source,” he said.
He also specified that he would continue his talks “by means of telephone diplomacy” with his counterpart Donald Trump and would discuss the question of the American withdrawal from Syria.
