G Balasubramanian, India's High Commissioner to Nigeria, has expressed optimism over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Nigeria, highlighting its potential to strengthen ties with Nigeria and the African continent as a whole, while strengthening cooperation on global challenges.
Speaking to ANI on Saturday, Balasubramanian highlighted the importance of Prime Minister Modi's maiden visit to West Africa. He highlighted Nigeria's strategic importance as Africa's most populous nation and one of its largest economies, making it a key partner for India.
More than 200 Indian companies have invested over $27 billion in Nigeria, making it the second largest employer after the Nigerian government.
Relations between India and Nigeria have deep historical roots. We established a diplomatic presence in Nigeria in 1958, two years before their independence, by opening an office in Lagos. Our political relations have been strong, both bilaterally and in multilateral forums. Trade and economic ties are also strong, with Indian companies playing a vital role in Nigeria's economy, Balasubramanian said.
Prime Minister Modis' visit is particularly notable as it follows his meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the G20 summit in 2023. The trip aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations, based on democratic and shared pluralism.
