Department of Education: Trump signs a decree aimed at dismantling the Department of Education

Washington – President Donald Trump signed an executive decree on Thursday calling for the dismantling of the American education department, advancing a campaign promise to dismantle a agency that has been a long -standing target of the Conservatives.

Trump ridiculed the Department of Education as a waste and polluted by liberal ideology. However, finishing his dismantling is probably impossible without an act of congress, which created the department in 1979. The Republicans declared that they would present a bill to achieve this.

The ministry, however, is not ready to close completely. The White House said the ministry will retain certain critical functions.

Trump said that his administration would close the department beyond his “fundamental necessities”, preserving his responsibilities for the financing of title I for low-income schools, Pell subsidies and money for disabled children. The White House said earlier that she would also continue to manage federal student loans.

The President blamed the United States late school performance department and said states will do a better job.

“It doesn't do us good,” he said during a white house ceremony.

Already, Trump's republican administration has emptied the agency. His workforce is reduced in two, and there have been deep cuts at the Office of Civil Rights and the Institute of Education Sciences, which collects data on the academic progress of the country.

The defenders of public schools said that the elimination of the department would leave children in a fundamentally uneven American education system.

“This is a dark day for millions of American children who depend on federal funding for quality education, including those of poor and rural communities with parents who voted for Trump,” said NAACP president Derrick Johnson.

The Democrats said that the order will be carried out in court and the congress, and they urged the Republicans to join them in opposition.

Trump's order is “dangerous and illegal” and will disproportionately harm the low-income students, colored students and disabled people, said representative Bobby Scott in Virginia, the best democrat of the Education and Workers' Chamber Committee.

The ministry “was founded in part to guarantee the application of student civil rights,” said Scott. “The champions of the segregation of public schools opposed and campaigned for a return to” rights of states “.”

Trump's vision of the vision of education praised the order.

“More swollen bureaucracy dictating what children learn or suffocating innovation with administrative formalities,” said Tiffany Justice, co-founder of Moms For Liberty, on social networks. “States, communities and parents can take the reins – adapt education to what really works for their children.”

The White House has not officially set out the functions of the department which could be transmitted to other departments or completely eliminated.

The ministry sends billions of dollars a year to schools and oversees $ 1.6 billion of federal student loans.

Currently, a large part of the agency's work revolves around the management of money – both its vast portfolio of student loans and a range of assistance programs for colleges and school districts, such as school meals and support for homeless students. The agency is also essential to supervise the application of civil rights.

States and districts already control local schools, including the study program, but some conservatives have pushed to reduce the chains attached to federal money and provide them to states as “block subsidies” to be used at their discretion. Block Grant has raised questions about vital funding sources, including title I, the greatest source of federal money to American K-12 schools. Families of disabled children have desperate what could happen from the work of the federal department protecting their rights.

Federal funding represents a relatively low part of public school budgets – around 14%. Money often supports additional programs for vulnerable students, such as the McKinney-Vento program for homeless students or title I for low-income schools.

Colleges and universities depend more on Washington's money, thanks to research subsidies as well as federal financial assistance that helps students pay their tuition fees.

The Republicans have spoken of the closure of the Department of Education for decades, saying that he was wastes taxpayers' money and inserts the federal government into decisions that should fall into states and schools. The idea has gained popularity recently when groups of conservative parents demand more authority over the education of their children.

In his platform, Trump has promised to close the department “and send it back to the United States, where it belongs.” Trump threw the department as a home for “radicals, fanatics and Marxists” who monitor their scope through advice and regulation.

Even while Trump moves to dismantle the department, he looked at it to promote elements of his program. He used investigative powers of the civil rights office and the threat of withdrawing money from federal education to target schools and colleges which are from his orders on transgender athletes participating in female sports, pro-Palestinian activism and diversity programs.

Senator Patty Murray from Washington, a democrat of the Senate, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Democrat, rejected Trump's assertion that he returns education to the States. She said he “tries in fact to exercise more and more control over local schools and dictate what they can and cannot teach”.

Even some Trump's allies have questioned its power to close the agency without action of the congress, and there are doubts about its political popularity. The room considered an amendment to close the agency in 2023, but 60 Republicans joined the Democrats to oppose it.

During Trump's first mandate, the Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos, sought to considerably reduce the agency's budget and asked the congress to bring together all the financing of kindergarten in the 12th year in block subsidies which offer states more flexibility in the way in which they spend federal money. This decision was rejected, with a repression of certain Republicans.

Leavitt is one of the three managers of the administration appointed in a trial by the Associated Press for the reasons for the first and the fifth amendment. The AD says that the three punish the news agency for the editorial decisions to which they oppose. The White House says that the AP does not follow an executive decree to designate the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
