Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the chief advisor to Bangladesh Muhammad Yunus in Bangkok on Friday at their first meeting since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.

Earlier, a PTI report suggested that Modi would probably meet Yunus. The Prime Minister and Yunus were sitting together on Thursday at a dinner organized on the sidelines of the Bimstec summit.

The talks also mark the first highest level of engagement with the interim government after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India and asked for asylum in August from last year. The former Prime Minister fled the Bangladesh following a massive demonstration led by students who overthrew the 16 -year -old regime of the Awami League.

Yunus said that Dhaka had sent formal letters to India in search of Hasina extradition to face a legal trial but received no official response from New Delhi.

In a letter to Yunus last month, Prime Minister Modi declared that India remains determined to advance his partnership with Bangladesh, motivated by aspirations common to peace, stability and prosperity, and based on mutual sensitivity to the interests and concerns of others.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multisectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organization of seven nations of Southern Asia and Southeast Asia with a total population of 1.73 billion people and a combined GDP of 5.2 billion US dollars. Thailand is the current president of the group. The current summit was the first physical meeting of leaders since the 4th Bimstec summit in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2018.
