“Desperately looking for some sort of exit ramp”: US political leaders react to Trump’s ceasefire announcement | Donald Trump

Political leaders and many Americans breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday evening when Donald Trump announced a tentative ceasefire agreement hours after threatening to destroy “all of Iran’s civilization” if Tehran failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within its self-imposed deadline.

The deal’s announcement came about 90 minutes before an 8 p.m. ET deadline on which Trump pledged to bomb Iranian power plants and bridges, which legal and military experts have called a war crime. But a last-minute intervention by Pakistan caused Trump to back down, at least temporarily, from his ultimatum of widespread destruction.

“Provided that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to the FULL, IMMEDIATE and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend bombing and attacks against Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote in a message Tuesday evening.

Iran’s foreign minister issued a statement shortly after saying passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be permitted for the next two weeks under Iranian military leadership.

Trump had earlier warned that “an entire civilization would die tonight, never to be brought back” if Iran did not allow commercial ships to pass safely through the strait. The president’s comments were swiftly condemned by Democrats, longtime supporters who broke with Trump over the war, and by Pope Leo, America’s first pontiff.

“I’m glad that Trump has backed down and is desperately looking for some sort of exit ramp for his ridiculous bluster,” Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader in the Senate, said Tuesday evening in reaction to the announcement of a two-week temporary ceasefire. Earlier, Schumer called Trump an “extremely sick person” who was waging a “gratuitous war of choice.”

After his increasingly bellicose threats of imminent demolitions, dozens of House Democrats, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, had called for Trump’s removal, either through impeachment or by invoking the 25th Amendment, a constitutional procedure to declare a sitting president unfit to hold office. Former Maga allies turned critics, including former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and far-right media personality Candace Owens, denounced Trump’s threats as “bad” and “crazy.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive congresswoman from New York, said the two-week deal “changes nothing.”

“The president has threatened genocide against the Iranian people and continues to exploit that threat,” she said on social media, again calling for his impeachment. “We can no longer risk the world or the well-being of our nation. »

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called Trump’s behavior “unhinged, unpresidential and unconscionable” in an interview Tuesday night on CNN. “The American people strongly oppose this irresponsible and chosen war,” he said. “He plunged America into this war without any plan, without any goal or exit strategy.”

Democrats will demand that Speaker Mike Johnson immediately reconvene the House to propose a war powers resolution to permanently end this conflict, Jeffries said.

While congressional Republicans had been publicly silent in response to Trump’s earlier threats, many welcomed the president’s acceptance of a short-term ceasefire, calling the move shrewd and tactical.

“Great news,” said Sen. Rick Scott of Florida. “This is an important first step toward holding Iran accountable and what happens when you have a leader who places peace through force in the face of chaos and weak appeasement policies. »

Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of the House’s loudest and most aggressive Iran hawks, said Tuesday night that he shares the hope that “we can end the Iranian regime’s reign of terror through diplomacy.”

But he added: “We must remember that the Strait of Hormuz was attacked by Iran after the start of the war, destroying freedom of navigation. Going forward, it is imperative that Iran is not rewarded for this hostile act against the world.”

Congressman Dan Crenshaw, a Texas Republican who has a history of breaking with Trump, criticized the president’s many critics for “clutching their pearls” over his bombastic rhetoric and once again taking the commander in chief “at face value.”

“Breathe,” Crenshaw wrote on X after the president’s announcement.

“President Trump speaks in terms of POWER, which is the only language our adversaries understand,” he continued. “Carefully worded diplomatic declarations make the UN feel good, but they also do nothing.”
