Chromebook Trial, Nadiem Says Ministry of Education and Culture’s Shadow Team Approved by President Jokowi

SinPo.id – Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Nadiem Makarim is on trial for alleged corruption in connection with the purchase of Chromebook laptops at the Corruption Crimes Court (Tipikor), Central Jakarta District Court, Monday, May 11, 2026.
During the trial, with the interrogation of the accused on the agenda, Nadiem revealed the existence of a shadow team that helped him run the program within the Ministry of Education and Culture. He said that the formation of the team was known and approved by the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.
“Your Majesty’s permission to explain that 90 percent of the ‘shadow team’ was obtained from within the ministry. They were therefore selected by me and approved by the President based on their track record in the ministry,” Nadiem said.
“So that’s what it means when the best people in the ministry are appointed and given the opportunity to lead,” he continued.
In addition, Nadiem said that a number of people with skills in the technological field were assisting the Ministry of Education and Culture’s programs. However, they would not receive salaries from the ministry, but from a subsidiary of PT Telkom.
“They belong to one of the subsidiaries of PT Telkom and there is a contract between the ministry and the PT Telkom company. So they are there,” he said.
Nadiem said the involvement of technology personnel was part of the President’s mandate to accelerate digital transformation in the national education sector.
“Why are people with technological knowledge assigned to the ministry under the digitalization program? Because this is a mandate I received from the President,” he said.
“During two meetings, in addition to moving from national exams to national assessments, the president decided in the meetings that the digitalization of education is a priority,” he added.
Furthermore, Nadiem highlighted that the Ministry of Education and Culture was tasked with creating application platforms that schools could use to improve the learning system.
“The mandate of the first plenary meeting of the cabinet, the specific direction from the president to the Minister of Education and Culture was to implement the role of technology in education. And at that time, the role of technology did not mean buying laptops, nothing. What the president meant by platforms was creating applications,” he added.
In his case, Nadiem Anwar Makarim was accused of corruption which caused financial losses to the state amounting to IDR 2.18 trillion related to the purchase of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM).
Nadiem carried out this action with a number of parties, namely Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam, Mulyatsyah, Sri Wahyuningsih and Jurist Tan.
Apart from this, the prosecutor also accused Nadiem of enriching himself worth IDR 809.59 billion which allegedly came from PT Solusi Karya Anak Bangsa (PT AKAB) through PT Gojek Indonesia.
Nadiem was charged with violating Article 2 paragraph (1) or Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Corruption Crimes as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001 in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) 1 of the Penal Code.
