Believe Me’s Carrie Johnson Breaks Silence on John Worboys’ Second Parole Attempt: ‘A Very Anxious Wait’
With Believe me ends on ITV and Carrie Johnson’s key role in bringing John Worboys to justice revealed, the 38-year-old has now spoken out after being refused parole for a second time last week.
In case you didn’t know, Carrie Johnson (then Symonds) was a teenager when she became involved in one of the UK’s most famous crime investigations. Aged 19, she was picked up by Worboys – also known as the “Black Cab Rapist” – at a bus stop as she tried to return home after a night out in Fulham.
Worboys used the same story about the vulnerable women he picked up; telling them he had just won money at the casino or playing the lottery, then offered them a “celebratory” glass of champagne. The drink would be mixed with sedatives, before he sexually assaulted them.
Worboys was convicted of assaulting 12 women in 2009. It was a shock to the victims and to the UK when the Parole Board announced in 2018 that Worboys would be released after just 10 years in prison.
Carrie, alongside other survivors, was instrumental in the legal fightback, leading to his parole being denied – with the former taxi driver found guilty of injuring four other women in 2019. He was sentenced to life with a minimum term of six additional years.
The rapist has now applied for a second parole, which was denied last week. [15th May] when a spokesperson for the parole board said: “The panel was not satisfied that he no longer posed a risk to the public and therefore did not order his release. »

In a statement shared via ITV when the series first aired, Carrie said: “I hope Believe me serves as a wake-up call to the police, CPS and parole board. Far too often, women and girls are left behind by the very institutions meant to protect them.
“The treatment of the victims in this case has been truly shameful. Reform is important, but what we most urgently need is a profound cultural change. It takes enormous courage for women to come forward. They need to know that when they do, they will be treated seriously and with respect, and that every effort will be made to ensure justice is done.”
Although Carrie said she did not believe she had been sexually assaulted, in a 2018 essay published in The timesshe detailed: “I think I would know if Worboys had raped me that night. I would have flashbacks or there would be horrible telltale signs when I woke up the next day. But I will never really know for sure what happened after he drugged me.”
